How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 28 ÷ 100 = 0.28
  2. Multiply: 0.28 × 63 = 17.64
  3. Check: Work backwards: 17.64 ÷ 63 × 100 = 28%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 28/100 = part/63, so part = 28 × 63 ÷ 100 = 17.64. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =28%*63. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

17.64 is the 28% share of 63. The remaining 72% is 45.36, and the two parts add back up to 63.

Discounts: 28% off an item priced $63 saves $17.64, so you pay $45.36.

Adding and taking away 28%

Increasing 63 by 28% gives 80.64 and decreasing it by 28% gives 45.36. These do not cancel out: raising 63 by 28% and then lowering the result by 28% ends at 58.0608, because the second 28% is taken of a bigger number.
