How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 28 ÷ 100 = 0.28
  2. Multiply: 0.28 × 75 = 21
  3. Check: Work backwards: 21 ÷ 75 × 100 = 28%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 28/100 = part/75, so part = 28 × 75 ÷ 100 = 21. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =28%*75. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

21 is the 28% share of 75. The remaining 72% is 54, and the two parts add back up to 75.

Discounts: 28% off an item priced $75 saves $21, so you pay $54.

Adding and taking away 28%

Increasing 75 by 28% gives 96 and decreasing it by 28% gives 54. These do not cancel out: raising 75 by 28% and then lowering the result by 28% ends at 69.12, because the second 28% is taken of a bigger number.
