How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 29 ÷ 100 = 0.29
  2. Multiply: 0.29 × 70 = 20.3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 20.3 ÷ 70 × 100 = 29%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 29/100 = part/70, so part = 29 × 70 ÷ 100 = 20.3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =29%*70. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

20.3 is the 29% share of 70. The remaining 71% is 49.7, and the two parts add back up to 70.

Discounts: 29% off an item priced $70 saves $20.3, so you pay $49.7.

Adding and taking away 29%

Increasing 70 by 29% gives 90.3 and decreasing it by 29% gives 49.7. These do not cancel out: raising 70 by 29% and then lowering the result by 29% ends at 64.113, because the second 29% is taken of a bigger number.
