How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 100 = 3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3 ÷ 100 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/100, so part = 3 × 100 ÷ 100 = 3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3 is the 3% share of 100. The remaining 97% is 97, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $100 saves $3, so you pay $97.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 100 by 3% gives 103 and decreasing it by 3% gives 97. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 99.91, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
