How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
- Multiply: 0.03 × 34 = 1.02
- Check: Work backwards: 1.02 ÷ 34 × 100 = 3%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/34, so part = 3 × 34 ÷ 100 = 1.02. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =3%*34. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.02 is the 3% share of 34. The remaining 97% is 32.98, and the two parts add back up to 34.
Discounts: 3% off an item priced $34 saves $1.02, so you pay $32.98.
Adding and taking away 3%
Increasing 34 by 3% gives 35.02 and decreasing it by 3% gives 32.98. These do not cancel out: raising 34 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 33.9694, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 34% of 3. 3% of 34 and 34% of 3 are always equal (both are 3 × 34 ÷ 100 = 1.02), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
