How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 300 = 45
- Check: Work backwards: 45 ÷ 300 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/300, so part = 15 × 300 ÷ 100 = 45. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*300. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
45 is the 15% share of 300. The remaining 85% is 255, and the two parts add back up to 300.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $300 saves $45, so you pay $255.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 300 by 15% gives 345 and decreasing it by 15% gives 255. These do not cancel out: raising 300 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 293.25, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
