How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
- Multiply: 0.03 × 37 = 1.11
- Check: Work backwards: 1.11 ÷ 37 × 100 = 3%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/37, so part = 3 × 37 ÷ 100 = 1.11. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =3%*37. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.11 is the 3% share of 37. The remaining 97% is 35.89, and the two parts add back up to 37.
Discounts: 3% off an item priced $37 saves $1.11, so you pay $35.89.
Adding and taking away 3%
Increasing 37 by 3% gives 38.11 and decreasing it by 3% gives 35.89. These do not cancel out: raising 37 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 36.9667, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 37% of 3. 3% of 37 and 37% of 3 are always equal (both are 3 × 37 ÷ 100 = 1.11), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
