How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 200 = 30
- Check: Work backwards: 30 ÷ 200 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/200, so part = 15 × 200 ÷ 100 = 30. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*200. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
30 is the 15% share of 200. The remaining 85% is 170, and the two parts add back up to 200.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $200 saves $30, so you pay $170.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 200 by 15% gives 230 and decreasing it by 15% gives 170. These do not cancel out: raising 200 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 195.5, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 200% of 15. 15% of 200 and 200% of 15 are always equal (both are 15 × 200 ÷ 100 = 30), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
