How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
- Multiply: 0.03 × 48 = 1.44
- Check: Work backwards: 1.44 ÷ 48 × 100 = 3%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/48, so part = 3 × 48 ÷ 100 = 1.44. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =3%*48. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.44 is the 3% share of 48. The remaining 97% is 46.56, and the two parts add back up to 48.
Discounts: 3% off an item priced $48 saves $1.44, so you pay $46.56.
Adding and taking away 3%
Increasing 48 by 3% gives 49.44 and decreasing it by 3% gives 46.56. These do not cancel out: raising 48 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 47.9568, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
