How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
- Multiply: 0.03 × 61 = 1.83
- Check: Work backwards: 1.83 ÷ 61 × 100 = 3%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/61, so part = 3 × 61 ÷ 100 = 1.83. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =3%*61. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.83 is the 3% share of 61. The remaining 97% is 59.17, and the two parts add back up to 61.
Discounts: 3% off an item priced $61 saves $1.83, so you pay $59.17.
Adding and taking away 3%
Increasing 61 by 3% gives 62.83 and decreasing it by 3% gives 59.17. These do not cancel out: raising 61 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 60.9451, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
