How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 63 = 1.89
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.89 ÷ 63 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/63, so part = 3 × 63 ÷ 100 = 1.89. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*63. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.89 is the 3% share of 63. The remaining 97% is 61.11, and the two parts add back up to 63.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $63 saves $1.89, so you pay $61.11.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 63 by 3% gives 64.89 and decreasing it by 3% gives 61.11. These do not cancel out: raising 63 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 62.9433, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
