How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 85 = 2.55
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.55 ÷ 85 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/85, so part = 3 × 85 ÷ 100 = 2.55. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*85. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.55 is the 3% share of 85. The remaining 97% is 82.45, and the two parts add back up to 85.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $85 saves $2.55, so you pay $82.45.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 85 by 3% gives 87.55 and decreasing it by 3% gives 82.45. These do not cancel out: raising 85 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 84.9235, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
