How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 89 = 2.67
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.67 ÷ 89 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/89, so part = 3 × 89 ÷ 100 = 2.67. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*89. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.67 is the 3% share of 89. The remaining 97% is 86.33, and the two parts add back up to 89.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $89 saves $2.67, so you pay $86.33.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 89 by 3% gives 91.67 and decreasing it by 3% gives 86.33. These do not cancel out: raising 89 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 88.9199, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
