How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 300 ÷ 100 = 3
- Multiply: 3 × 20 = 60
- Check: Work backwards: 60 ÷ 20 × 100 = 300%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 300/100 = part/20, so part = 300 × 20 ÷ 100 = 60. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =300%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 300% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 20: it is 3 times 20.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 300% of its $20 cost means selling it for $60.
Adding and taking away 300%
Increasing 20 by 300% gives 80. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 300% and then lowering the result by 300% ends at -160, because the second 300% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 20% of 300. 300% of 20 and 20% of 300 are always equal (both are 300 × 20 ÷ 100 = 60), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
