How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 300 ÷ 100 = 3
- Multiply: 3 × 5 = 15
- Check: Work backwards: 15 ÷ 5 × 100 = 300%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 300/100 = part/5, so part = 300 × 5 ÷ 100 = 15. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =300%*5. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
Because 300% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 5: it is 3 times 5.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 300% of its $5 cost means selling it for $15.
Adding and taking away 300%
Increasing 5 by 300% gives 20. These do not cancel out: raising 5 by 300% and then lowering the result by 300% ends at -40, because the second 300% is taken of a bigger number.
