How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 31 ÷ 100 = 0.31
  2. Multiply: 0.31 × 12 = 3.72
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.72 ÷ 12 × 100 = 31%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 31/100 = part/12, so part = 31 × 12 ÷ 100 = 3.72. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =31%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.72 is the 31% share of 12. The remaining 69% is 8.28, and the two parts add back up to 12.

Discounts: 31% off an item priced $12 saves $3.72, so you pay $8.28.

Adding and taking away 31%

Increasing 12 by 31% gives 15.72 and decreasing it by 31% gives 8.28. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 31% and then lowering the result by 31% ends at 10.8468, because the second 31% is taken of a bigger number.
