How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 31 ÷ 100 = 0.31
  2. Multiply: 0.31 × 2 = 0.62
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.62 ÷ 2 × 100 = 31%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 31/100 = part/2, so part = 31 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.62. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =31%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.62 is the 31% share of 2. The remaining 69% is 1.38, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 31% off an item priced $2 saves $0.62, so you pay $1.38.

Adding and taking away 31%

Increasing 2 by 31% gives 2.62 and decreasing it by 31% gives 1.38. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 31% and then lowering the result by 31% ends at 1.8078, because the second 31% is taken of a bigger number.
