How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 33 ÷ 100 = 0.33
  2. Multiply: 0.33 × 15 = 4.95
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.95 ÷ 15 × 100 = 33%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 33/100 = part/15, so part = 33 × 15 ÷ 100 = 4.95. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =33%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.95 is the 33% share of 15. The remaining 67% is 10.05, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 33% off an item priced $15 saves $4.95, so you pay $10.05.

Adding and taking away 33%

Increasing 15 by 33% gives 19.95 and decreasing it by 33% gives 10.05. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 33% and then lowering the result by 33% ends at 13.3665, because the second 33% is taken of a bigger number.
