How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 33 ÷ 100 = 0.33
  2. Multiply: 0.33 × 16 = 5.28
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.28 ÷ 16 × 100 = 33%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 33/100 = part/16, so part = 33 × 16 ÷ 100 = 5.28. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =33%*16. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.28 is the 33% share of 16. The remaining 67% is 10.72, and the two parts add back up to 16.

Discounts: 33% off an item priced $16 saves $5.28, so you pay $10.72.

Adding and taking away 33%

Increasing 16 by 33% gives 21.28 and decreasing it by 33% gives 10.72. These do not cancel out: raising 16 by 33% and then lowering the result by 33% ends at 14.2576, because the second 33% is taken of a bigger number.
