How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 33 ÷ 100 = 0.33
  2. Multiply: 0.33 × 24 = 7.92
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.92 ÷ 24 × 100 = 33%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 33/100 = part/24, so part = 33 × 24 ÷ 100 = 7.92. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =33%*24. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7.92 is the 33% share of 24. The remaining 67% is 16.08, and the two parts add back up to 24.

Discounts: 33% off an item priced $24 saves $7.92, so you pay $16.08.

Adding and taking away 33%

Increasing 24 by 33% gives 31.92 and decreasing it by 33% gives 16.08. These do not cancel out: raising 24 by 33% and then lowering the result by 33% ends at 21.3864, because the second 33% is taken of a bigger number.
