How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 14 = 4.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.9 ÷ 14 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/14, so part = 35 × 14 ÷ 100 = 4.9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*14. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.9 is the 35% share of 14. The remaining 65% is 9.1, and the two parts add back up to 14.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $14 saves $4.9, so you pay $9.1.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 14 by 35% gives 18.9 and decreasing it by 35% gives 9.1. These do not cancel out: raising 14 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 12.285, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
