How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 20 = 7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7 ÷ 20 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/20, so part = 35 × 20 ÷ 100 = 7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7 is the 35% share of 20. The remaining 65% is 13, and the two parts add back up to 20.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $20 saves $7, so you pay $13.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 20 by 35% gives 27 and decreasing it by 35% gives 13. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 17.55, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 20% of 35. 35% of 20 and 20% of 35 are always equal (both are 35 × 20 ÷ 100 = 7), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
