How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 25 = 8.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 8.75 ÷ 25 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/25, so part = 35 × 25 ÷ 100 = 8.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

8.75 is the 35% share of 25. The remaining 65% is 16.25, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $25 saves $8.75, so you pay $16.25.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 25 by 35% gives 33.75 and decreasing it by 35% gives 16.25. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 21.9375, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
