How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
- Multiply: 0.35 × 3 = 1.05
- Check: Work backwards: 1.05 ÷ 3 × 100 = 35%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/3, so part = 35 × 3 ÷ 100 = 1.05. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =35%*3. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.05 is the 35% share of 3. The remaining 65% is 1.95, and the two parts add back up to 3.
Discounts: 35% off an item priced $3 saves $1.05, so you pay $1.95.
Adding and taking away 35%
Increasing 3 by 35% gives 4.05 and decreasing it by 35% gives 1.95. These do not cancel out: raising 3 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 2.6325, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 3% of 35. 35% of 3 and 3% of 35 are always equal (both are 35 × 3 ÷ 100 = 1.05), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
