How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 51 = 17.85
  3. Check: Work backwards: 17.85 ÷ 51 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/51, so part = 35 × 51 ÷ 100 = 17.85. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*51. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

17.85 is the 35% share of 51. The remaining 65% is 33.15, and the two parts add back up to 51.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $51 saves $17.85, so you pay $33.15.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 51 by 35% gives 68.85 and decreasing it by 35% gives 33.15. These do not cancel out: raising 51 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 44.7525, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
