How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 53 = 18.55
  3. Check: Work backwards: 18.55 ÷ 53 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/53, so part = 35 × 53 ÷ 100 = 18.55. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*53. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

18.55 is the 35% share of 53. The remaining 65% is 34.45, and the two parts add back up to 53.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $53 saves $18.55, so you pay $34.45.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 53 by 35% gives 71.55 and decreasing it by 35% gives 34.45. These do not cancel out: raising 53 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 46.5075, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
