How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
- Multiply: 0.35 × 6 = 2.1
- Check: Work backwards: 2.1 ÷ 6 × 100 = 35%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/6, so part = 35 × 6 ÷ 100 = 2.1. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =35%*6. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.1 is the 35% share of 6. The remaining 65% is 3.9, and the two parts add back up to 6.
Discounts: 35% off an item priced $6 saves $2.1, so you pay $3.9.
Adding and taking away 35%
Increasing 6 by 35% gives 8.1 and decreasing it by 35% gives 3.9. These do not cancel out: raising 6 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 5.265, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
