How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 61 = 21.35
  3. Check: Work backwards: 21.35 ÷ 61 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/61, so part = 35 × 61 ÷ 100 = 21.35. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*61. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

21.35 is the 35% share of 61. The remaining 65% is 39.65, and the two parts add back up to 61.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $61 saves $21.35, so you pay $39.65.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 61 by 35% gives 82.35 and decreasing it by 35% gives 39.65. These do not cancel out: raising 61 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 53.5275, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
