How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 82 = 28.7
  3. Check: Work backwards: 28.7 ÷ 82 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/82, so part = 35 × 82 ÷ 100 = 28.7. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*82. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

28.7 is the 35% share of 82. The remaining 65% is 53.3, and the two parts add back up to 82.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $82 saves $28.7, so you pay $53.3.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 82 by 35% gives 110.7 and decreasing it by 35% gives 53.3. These do not cancel out: raising 82 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 71.955, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
