How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 98 = 34.3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 34.3 ÷ 98 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/98, so part = 35 × 98 ÷ 100 = 34.3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*98. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

34.3 is the 35% share of 98. The remaining 65% is 63.7, and the two parts add back up to 98.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $98 saves $34.3, so you pay $63.7.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 98 by 35% gives 132.3 and decreasing it by 35% gives 63.7. These do not cancel out: raising 98 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 85.995, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
