How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 98 ÷ 100 = 0.98
  2. Multiply: 0.98 × 35 = 34.3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 34.3 ÷ 35 × 100 = 98%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 98/100 = part/35, so part = 98 × 35 ÷ 100 = 34.3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =98%*35. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

34.3 is the 98% share of 35. The remaining 2% is 0.7, and the two parts add back up to 35.

Discounts: 98% off an item priced $35 saves $34.3, so you pay $0.7.

Adding and taking away 98%

Increasing 35 by 98% gives 69.3 and decreasing it by 98% gives 0.7. These do not cancel out: raising 35 by 98% and then lowering the result by 98% ends at 1.386, because the second 98% is taken of a bigger number.
