How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 36 ÷ 100 = 0.36
- Multiply: 0.36 × 8 = 2.88
- Check: Work backwards: 2.88 ÷ 8 × 100 = 36%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 36/100 = part/8, so part = 36 × 8 ÷ 100 = 2.88. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =36%*8. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.88 is the 36% share of 8. The remaining 64% is 5.12, and the two parts add back up to 8.
Discounts: 36% off an item priced $8 saves $2.88, so you pay $5.12.
Adding and taking away 36%
Increasing 8 by 36% gives 10.88 and decreasing it by 36% gives 5.12. These do not cancel out: raising 8 by 36% and then lowering the result by 36% ends at 6.9632, because the second 36% is taken of a bigger number.
