How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 38 ÷ 100 = 0.38
  2. Multiply: 0.38 × 12 = 4.56
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.56 ÷ 12 × 100 = 38%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 38/100 = part/12, so part = 38 × 12 ÷ 100 = 4.56. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =38%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.56 is the 38% share of 12. The remaining 62% is 7.44, and the two parts add back up to 12.

Discounts: 38% off an item priced $12 saves $4.56, so you pay $7.44.

Adding and taking away 38%

Increasing 12 by 38% gives 16.56 and decreasing it by 38% gives 7.44. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 38% and then lowering the result by 38% ends at 10.2672, because the second 38% is taken of a bigger number.
