How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 38 ÷ 100 = 0.38
  2. Multiply: 0.38 × 50 = 19
  3. Check: Work backwards: 19 ÷ 50 × 100 = 38%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 38/100 = part/50, so part = 38 × 50 ÷ 100 = 19. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =38%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

19 is the 38% share of 50. The remaining 62% is 31, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 38% off an item priced $50 saves $19, so you pay $31.

Adding and taking away 38%

Increasing 50 by 38% gives 69 and decreasing it by 38% gives 31. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 38% and then lowering the result by 38% ends at 42.78, because the second 38% is taken of a bigger number.
