How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 39 ÷ 100 = 0.39
  2. Multiply: 0.39 × 13 = 5.07
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.07 ÷ 13 × 100 = 39%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 39/100 = part/13, so part = 39 × 13 ÷ 100 = 5.07. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =39%*13. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.07 is the 39% share of 13. The remaining 61% is 7.93, and the two parts add back up to 13.

Discounts: 39% off an item priced $13 saves $5.07, so you pay $7.93.

Adding and taking away 39%

Increasing 13 by 39% gives 18.07 and decreasing it by 39% gives 7.93. These do not cancel out: raising 13 by 39% and then lowering the result by 39% ends at 11.0227, because the second 39% is taken of a bigger number.
