How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 39 ÷ 100 = 0.39
  2. Multiply: 0.39 × 64 = 24.96
  3. Check: Work backwards: 24.96 ÷ 64 × 100 = 39%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 39/100 = part/64, so part = 39 × 64 ÷ 100 = 24.96. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =39%*64. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

24.96 is the 39% share of 64. The remaining 61% is 39.04, and the two parts add back up to 64.

Discounts: 39% off an item priced $64 saves $24.96, so you pay $39.04.

Adding and taking away 39%

Increasing 64 by 39% gives 88.96 and decreasing it by 39% gives 39.04. These do not cancel out: raising 64 by 39% and then lowering the result by 39% ends at 54.2656, because the second 39% is taken of a bigger number.
