How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
  2. Multiply: 0.04 × 39 = 1.56
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.56 ÷ 39 × 100 = 4%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/39, so part = 4 × 39 ÷ 100 = 1.56. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =4%*39. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.56 is the 4% share of 39. The remaining 96% is 37.44, and the two parts add back up to 39.

Discounts: 4% off an item priced $39 saves $1.56, so you pay $37.44.

Adding and taking away 4%

Increasing 39 by 4% gives 40.56 and decreasing it by 4% gives 37.44. These do not cancel out: raising 39 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 38.9376, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.
