How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
  2. Multiply: 0.04 × 6 = 0.24
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.24 ÷ 6 × 100 = 4%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/6, so part = 4 × 6 ÷ 100 = 0.24. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =4%*6. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.24 is the 4% share of 6. The remaining 96% is 5.76, and the two parts add back up to 6.

Discounts: 4% off an item priced $6 saves $0.24, so you pay $5.76.

Adding and taking away 4%

Increasing 6 by 4% gives 6.24 and decreasing it by 4% gives 5.76. These do not cancel out: raising 6 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 5.9904, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.
