How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
  2. Multiply: 0.06 × 4 = 0.24
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.24 ÷ 4 × 100 = 6%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/4, so part = 6 × 4 ÷ 100 = 0.24. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =6%*4. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.24 is the 6% share of 4. The remaining 94% is 3.76, and the two parts add back up to 4.

Discounts: 6% off an item priced $4 saves $0.24, so you pay $3.76.

Adding and taking away 6%

Increasing 4 by 6% gives 4.24 and decreasing it by 6% gives 3.76. These do not cancel out: raising 4 by 6% and then lowering the result by 6% ends at 3.9856, because the second 6% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 4% of 6. 6% of 4 and 4% of 6 are always equal (both are 6 × 4 ÷ 100 = 0.24), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
