How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
  2. Multiply: 0.04 × 63 = 2.52
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.52 ÷ 63 × 100 = 4%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/63, so part = 4 × 63 ÷ 100 = 2.52. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =4%*63. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.52 is the 4% share of 63. The remaining 96% is 60.48, and the two parts add back up to 63.

Discounts: 4% off an item priced $63 saves $2.52, so you pay $60.48.

Adding and taking away 4%

Increasing 63 by 4% gives 65.52 and decreasing it by 4% gives 60.48. These do not cancel out: raising 63 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 62.8992, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.
