How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
  2. Multiply: 0.04 × 9 = 0.36
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.36 ÷ 9 × 100 = 4%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/9, so part = 4 × 9 ÷ 100 = 0.36. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =4%*9. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.36 is the 4% share of 9. The remaining 96% is 8.64, and the two parts add back up to 9.

Discounts: 4% off an item priced $9 saves $0.36, so you pay $8.64.

Adding and taking away 4%

Increasing 9 by 4% gives 9.36 and decreasing it by 4% gives 8.64. These do not cancel out: raising 9 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 8.9856, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 9% of 4. 4% of 9 and 9% of 4 are always equal (both are 4 × 9 ÷ 100 = 0.36), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
