How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
- Multiply: 0.04 × 90 = 3.6
- Check: Work backwards: 3.6 ÷ 90 × 100 = 4%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/90, so part = 4 × 90 ÷ 100 = 3.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =4%*90. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
3.6 is the 4% share of 90. The remaining 96% is 86.4, and the two parts add back up to 90.
Discounts: 4% off an item priced $90 saves $3.6, so you pay $86.4.
Adding and taking away 4%
Increasing 90 by 4% gives 93.6 and decreasing it by 4% gives 86.4. These do not cancel out: raising 90 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 89.856, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 90% of 4. 4% of 90 and 90% of 4 are always equal (both are 4 × 90 ÷ 100 = 3.6), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
