How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
- Multiply: 0.4 × 13 = 5.2
- Check: Work backwards: 5.2 ÷ 13 × 100 = 40%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/13, so part = 40 × 13 ÷ 100 = 5.2. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =40%*13. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
5.2 is the 40% share of 13. The remaining 60% is 7.8, and the two parts add back up to 13.
Discounts: 40% off an item priced $13 saves $5.2, so you pay $7.8.
Adding and taking away 40%
Increasing 13 by 40% gives 18.2 and decreasing it by 40% gives 7.8. These do not cancel out: raising 13 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 10.92, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
