How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13
  2. Multiply: 0.13 × 40 = 5.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.2 ÷ 40 × 100 = 13%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/100 = part/40, so part = 13 × 40 ÷ 100 = 5.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =13%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.2 is the 13% share of 40. The remaining 87% is 34.8, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 13% off an item priced $40 saves $5.2, so you pay $34.8.

Adding and taking away 13%

Increasing 40 by 13% gives 45.2 and decreasing it by 13% gives 34.8. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 13% and then lowering the result by 13% ends at 39.324, because the second 13% is taken of a bigger number.
