How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 2 = 0.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.8 ÷ 2 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/2, so part = 40 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.8 is the 40% share of 2. The remaining 60% is 1.2, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $2 saves $0.8, so you pay $1.2.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 2 by 40% gives 2.8 and decreasing it by 40% gives 1.2. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 1.68, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 40. 40% of 2 and 2% of 40 are always equal (both are 40 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.8), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
