How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 40 = 0.8
- Check: Work backwards: 0.8 ÷ 40 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/40, so part = 2 × 40 ÷ 100 = 0.8. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.8 is the 2% share of 40. The remaining 98% is 39.2, and the two parts add back up to 40.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $40 saves $0.8, so you pay $39.2.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 40 by 2% gives 40.8 and decreasing it by 2% gives 39.2. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 39.984, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 40% of 2. 2% of 40 and 40% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 40 ÷ 100 = 0.8), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
