How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 40 = 14
  3. Check: Work backwards: 14 ÷ 40 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/40, so part = 35 × 40 ÷ 100 = 14. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

14 is the 35% share of 40. The remaining 65% is 26, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $40 saves $14, so you pay $26.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 40 by 35% gives 54 and decreasing it by 35% gives 26. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 35.1, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
