How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 4 = 1.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.6 ÷ 4 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/4, so part = 40 × 4 ÷ 100 = 1.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*4. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.6 is the 40% share of 4. The remaining 60% is 2.4, and the two parts add back up to 4.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $4 saves $1.6, so you pay $2.4.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 4 by 40% gives 5.6 and decreasing it by 40% gives 2.4. These do not cancel out: raising 4 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 3.36, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 4% of 40. 40% of 4 and 4% of 40 are always equal (both are 40 × 4 ÷ 100 = 1.6), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
