How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
  2. Multiply: 0.04 × 40 = 1.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.6 ÷ 40 × 100 = 4%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/40, so part = 4 × 40 ÷ 100 = 1.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =4%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.6 is the 4% share of 40. The remaining 96% is 38.4, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 4% off an item priced $40 saves $1.6, so you pay $38.4.

Adding and taking away 4%

Increasing 40 by 4% gives 41.6 and decreasing it by 4% gives 38.4. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 39.936, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.
