How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 64 = 25.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 25.6 ÷ 64 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/64, so part = 40 × 64 ÷ 100 = 25.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*64. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

25.6 is the 40% share of 64. The remaining 60% is 38.4, and the two parts add back up to 64.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $64 saves $25.6, so you pay $38.4.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 64 by 40% gives 89.6 and decreasing it by 40% gives 38.4. These do not cancel out: raising 64 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 53.76, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
